There is an increasing need for different types of fuels in the maritime industry to lessen the environmental effects of maritime transportation. Maritime shipping is responsible for around 3% of the world's total CO2 emissions and 10–15% of global sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). At the same time, sea transport handles 90% of global cargo.
