The Division of Maritime Studies is part of the Institute of Technology, University of Moratuwa (ITUM), a state engineering technology institute established in 2000 at Diyagama, Homagama, near Colombo in Sri Lanka. The division runs two diploma programs, Marine Engineering Technology and Nautical Studies, both designed to meet the requirements of the IMO STCW convention for seafarers. Nautical students complete sea training as deck cadets, with places provided by the Ceylon Shipping Corporation and other operators, while marine engineering students complete in-plant industrial training. Teaching facilities include firefighting, life-saving appliance, seamanship, marine engineering and shipboard electrical laboratories, along with a chart room. The division also offers STCW short courses for seafarers. It holds ISO 9001:2015 certification issued by the Indian Register of Shipping and is audited every year by Sri Lanka's Merchant Shipping Secretariat.
