Richard Hares and Jim Pearce, the company's founders, first opened Darglow in a modest space at Cobb's Quay Marina in Poole Harbour, which is located on the south coast of England. Both of them were engineers, and Richard was also an avid sailor in his spare time. In the beginning, they were both distributors of marine engines and equipment and did work in all areas of general maritime engineering. They first focused on engine re-fitting, but later expanded their services to include the production of shafts and stern gear.
