Merchant ships in Finland must be registered. The Register is overseen by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom and the State Department of Ă…land. Traficom oversees the Ship Register for all of Finland, excluding the Ă…land region. The State Department of Ă…land oversees the registration of ships in Ă…land. These two authorities are also in charge of handling ship mortgages.
