The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is a multilateral agreement that was ratified and officially entered into force in the year 1982. It superseded the four Geneva Conventions that were signed in April of 1958, each of which dealt with a different aspect of maritime law: the territorial sea and the contiguous zone; the continental shelf; the high seas; fishing and the conservation of living resources on the high seas; and the continental shelf.
